▶ Your Answer :
The author argues that
the disappearance of western gazelle attributes to the larger number of
predators in the eastern preserve. However, the lack of evidence leads me to
question credibility of the argument that it is due to the predators.
First, the author must
provide evidence whether the innate conditions of eastern and western
preserves. The author argues that the eastern preserve’s climate is “typically”
similar to the western preserve except the slightly less rainfall. However, the
weather condition may have been an aberration three years ago when the western
gazelles migrated to the eastern preserve. The climate was so dry that the
plants that are fed on the gazelles died. If this is the case, the
environmental condition played a critical role in disappearance of western gazelles.
Moreover, the inherent conditions of eastern and western preserve may be
significantly different. Eastern preserve may be only suitable for eastern
gazelles to live, but western gazelles may have failed to adjust to the
environment in the eastern preserve.
Second, the author needs
to prove whether elimination of western gazelles can be adequate and valid
evidence. The author fails to suggest a fact about the one hundred lions which
moved to the eastern preserve. Without the evidence, we could assume that the
lions were eliminated as well. Since lions are main predators of western
gazelles, it seems more plausible that both animals disappeared due to the
environmental factors. Furthermore, author indicates that there already have
been many gazelles in the eastern preserve. Therefore, disappearance of one
hundred gazelles may not be substantial in comparison of a myriad number of
gazelles in the preserve.
Lastly, we need evidence
whether western gazelles’ disappearance was caused by the predators in the
eastern preserve. The author overlooks other possible factors for the
elimination of western gazelles. The gazelles could have disappeared because
hunters indiscriminately killed a plethora of the gazelles. In addition, it is
possible that the lack of food could have caused death of gazelles.
In conclusion, the author’s
argument is unconvincing in many respects. In order to strengthen the argument,
the author should provide evidence regarding the inherent conditions of the tow
preserves. Moreover, the author needs to suggest more evidence to supplement
elimination of western gazelles. Finally, the author needs to examine other
factors for their disappearance.
