In
this current society, it is debatable whether formal education is effective. I
agree with the statement that formal education tends to restrain our thoughts.
Granted,
formal education can be effective to set our spirits free. Nowadays, many
college students take many courses outside of their major or have double majors
through formal education. College education can open many doors for students to
seek their true talents by allowing them to study diverse fields. Moreover, formal
education offers them opportunities to learn about people who have different
philosophy and life experience. Therefore, students can grasp an opportunity to
broaden their horizons and learn think out of box due to various experiences
through formal education. Thus, formal education such as schooling can be a good
way to help people to become a free thinker.
However,
formal education tends to undermine creativity and innovative thinking. Steve
Jobs is a personal computer pioneer and co-founder of Apple Computer. Jobs
dropped out the college in six months of the first semester. He believed the
courses in the college do not stimulate new and creative ways of thinking. After
giving up on the college education, Jobs started to run Apple Computer in his
friend’s garage. As a result, the company became successful since Jobs created
a personal computer that is more user-friendly than conventional computer.
Moreover, IPhone was so innovative that it has become an imperative part of
daily life of people in the world. If Jobs did not terminate the college
education, he may not have been mired in producing banal items and may have not
distinguishable. Hence, formal education is not conducive to have innovative
minds.
In
addition, formal ways of education often fail to discover and develop ones’
talents. Hellen Keller was a deaf and blind. She was not able to adjust school
life and consistently bullied by her classmates. The teachers recommended her
to quit schooling as they had no good ways to instruct her. However, Anne
Sullivan visited Keller’s home and taught her by writing on her hands. Due to
the creative teaching, Keller started to learn a myriad of subjects from
history to mathematics. Finally, Keller became a respectable figure and a paragon
of people with disability. Without Anne Sullivan’s patient efforts, Keller may
have not become a paramount figure. Therefore, formal education is often
ineffective to provide opportunities for people who are mired in significant
challenges.
In
conclusion, I strongly believe that formal education often hinder people from
honing their talents and setting their spirits free. Therefore, students need
to grasp opportunities to learn about many different subjects outside of
classes.
