In this current society, scandals play a
substantial role in informing people. I partially agree with the statement that
scandals are useful in brining attention on problems in that speakers can also
help people to be aware of societal problems.
First, scandals can be helpful to provide
crucial information to the people in the field of politics. President Richard
Nixon was involved in several illicit acts to be reelected as a President. The
Watergate Scandal revealed that Nixon installed a wiretap in his office to
record conversations of Democrat Senators. Furthermore, the Republican Senators
illicitly broke in the Democratic Convention Center in order to obtain useful information.
Because the illegal activities were disclosed to the public, the politicians
who participated in the devious activities were incarcerated and Nixon had to
resign from the presidency. Without the scandal, people may have not realized
the political crime. Therefore, this example revels that scandals can help to
inform the critical matters in politics to the citizens.
In addition, scandals also ensure the
general public to be aware of problems in the business world. Take Bernard
Madoff for example. Madoff was a stock broker and investor. He created
Ponzi scheme to defraud thousands of people with billions of dollars. The Ponzi
Scheme Scandal disclosed that the amount of missing money including fabricated
gains were 65 billion dollars. Madoff was sentenced with 150 years in a prison.
The scandal provided the information regarding a critical fraud case to the
people in the United States. It helped people to be cautious of investment and
accounting violations. Thus, scandals are useful to teach citizens imperative
lessons about serious problems in the business world.
However, along with scandals, speakers can
also play a significant role in addressing societal problems. Martin Luther
King was a civil right activist who fought against Jim Crow Law. King’s speech “I
Have a Dream” was so inspirational and powerful that most American citizens and
people in the world became aware of malicious nature of the racial segregation
and the value of social equality and freedom. A myriad of civil rights activists
and religious leaders engaged in the civil movement and took extensive measures
to abolish Jim Crown Law. Without the effective speech of King, the abolition
of Jim Crow Law could have been delayed. Hence, speeches of prominent leaders
can be an effective mean to bring attention of people to important social
issues.
In conclusion, both scandals and speech of distinguishable
leaders are important to help the general publics to be aware imperative issues
in our society. Therefore, leaders of a society need to go extra mile to
develop ways to inform a wide arrange of people.
