▶ Your Answer :
Various scandals can be discussion topics among people
as scandals are usually located in the center of contemporary main stream
broadcasting. It could be a good conversation starter; however, in terms of
focusing on problems, as the argument insisted, scandals cannot play an
effective role that much.
First of all, most scandals do not deliver information
or real problems, but in most cases, attract people’s attentions by provoking
controversial issues. In fact, this effect, rather, might hinder people’s eyes
from considering a real problem. Former president Clinton’s sex scandal can be
an example, in which the problem that media brought up was his morality,
especially derived from the sex scandal. However, real problems to examine at
that time were far beyond that scandal such as, his political decisions,
diplomatic strategies, or internal affair management style. Thus, it can be
said scandal does not help us focus on problems but scatter real problems.
In addition to the matter of its contents (not a
problem, but a gossip), scandal has been used as a negative political campaign
tool. Whenever election seasons come, no matter the presidential or state level
election, it is not difficult to see a party’s negative campaign against its
counter party’s candidate. This is not a case that helps us attention on
problems either, but the people use scandal as a campaign tool. In this regard,
scandal would be useful for “winning the election,” but not for focusing people’s
attention on problems as the argument claimed.
Lastly, the impact of scandal on individuals are
tremendous than we thought. For instance, an alleged romance sandal about a
celebrity in South Korea has caused the celebrity’s suicide. Since the characteristics
of scandal attract people’s attention on the inappropriately regarded relationship,
the public wrote abundant humiliating comments on the scandal news. The
celebrity always monitored the phenomenon and made the tragic choice.
To some extent, scandal may help the public pay
attention to untold problems as the argument stated. Nonetheless, with these
three reasons chronicled in this response (containing improper contents matter,
being used by other purposes as a campaign tool, and impacting seriously on
individuals), the argument is not cogent to convince me. |
