▶ Topic : Woven baskets
characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found
only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and
therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently,
however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos,
an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very
deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat,
and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean
baskets were not uniquely Palean.

▶ Your Answer :
Certain logical errors were overlooked in the argument supporting the notion that Palean baskets were not used only by Palean. However, the argument depends on several unsubstantiated assumptions and is therefore unpersuasive as it stands. First, the author assumes that the baskets must have been used by non-Palean people, since Palean baskets were found in Lithos. However, we are not informed about the time when the baskets were made and located in Lithos. In the worst case scenario, it is possible that the baskets were made in Palea but moved to Lithos and buried just a few years ago by contemporary people. This means that the baskets in Lithos still could be uniquely Palean. Thus, in order to support the author's assumption, the author should provide clear evidence of the time when the baskets were made and moved. Second, the author's conclusion depends on the assumption that Brim River has been existed, since that time. Yet it might not be necessarily true. The author overlooks the possibility that Brim River may have not been existed at that time and be formed later because of some geological factors like climate change. And another possibility is that the river may have been very narrow and shallow. In this case, the baskets found in Lithos may have been easily moved from Palea. Therefore, to justify the assumption, the author should provide more information about the river's history. Lastly, the author states that Paleans must have not been to Lithos because no Palean boats have been discovered. However, this evidence is not enough to substantiate the impossibility to reach Lithos from Palea at that time. It is entirely possible that Palean boats existed but were destroyed during war. Moreover, other Palean artifacts that were apparently made by Paleans might be found in Lithos, which means that Paleans could exchange goods and interact with Lithos. So, the author should provide more evidence that Paleans could not reach Lithos. In conclusion, in arguing that Palean baskets could be used by non-Palean people, this argument presents certain logical errors that weaken the author's line of reasoning.
