Issue:
People who work in the arts and humanities should earn less than those who work in the sciences and economics because the benefit of the arts and humanities to the population is less important than that of scientific or economic endeavors.

Some people might
say that economist or scientists should earn more money than artists or
philosophers. That’s because they believe that people who works in economic or
science area bring more visible benefit. However, in my perspective, there is
absolute reason to underestimate art and humanity studies.
What I want to say
clearly is, first of all, we can’t simply think practical studies without
liberal studies. All those studies’ objective is clear: Making people well. Why
economists do lots of research and develop many models to predict future market
situation? They let people flourish and be happy. While economists developed
their model, they had to think about what fairness is and how we can distribute
wealth fairly. Like this, practical studies have come out to the world to make
people happy efficiently. And its ultimate goal is equal to that of liberal
studies, so there is no reason to underestimate liberal arts.
Secondly, arts or
humanities have different kind of happiness to us. We all know that we are
happy for money. One of the most important reasons to get a job is to earn a
living. However, it doesn’t explain fully why we have a job. It is normal that
many students say their dream in school like “I want to be the president.” However,
earning money may not be only reason for being a president. For him or her,
president may be not only the method to get salary from it, but also his or her
dream itself. Achieving dream is a privilege that we get. We feel happy for it
and put our own life for it. This is what economics can’t give us and
humanities often give us clue what we really want to do. In literatures, many
philosophers’ thought, and music, we can experience other lives and realize who
we are. Then, we can imagine and try to look our future clearly.
In sum up, the
fundamental basis of both areas can’t be separated in terms of pursuing
happiness in our life. Moreover, the happiness comes from liberal studies
differs from practical studies one, so we can’t evaluate two different subject with
same standard. So it is unfair to say that people who devote themselves in arts
and humanities should get less money compared to economists or scientists.
