The claim reflects a benevolent intention
of universities requiring students to study abroad in a foreign country. I
agree that experiences of such will give broad global insight and advantages in
business after the student graduates and enter companies. However, some
students only spend time socializing with friends or students who have
difficulties affording the costs of living abroad will have small chance to
learn the different cultures. These experiences will not be very helpful for such
students mentioned before later in life after they graduate college and begin
social life.
Experience of studying abroad will enhance
the student’s global perspective. For instance, someone who was raised in a
Christian dominated society, with Western values and a skewed view of history
will be left out of an increasingly global culture. In addition, students who
have studied in a foreign country will be able to take more advantages in
business after they graduate college and start a business. For instance, for an
American business student who is not well-versed in Chinese language, business practices
and economic demands will fall behind.
On the other hand, studying abroad could be
useless for some of the students in several circumstances following below. Some
of the students merely spend their time partying with foreign friends and do
not concentrate on coursework. Students try to mimic the movie “Euro Trip” which
itself was created to reflect real-life behavior. What is more is that studying
in another county has a possibility to advantage people who can afford it. The
reason is that the cost of airplane tickets or living expense can be a burden for
students who have difficulty in paying such costs. In this case, students who
have the ability to use much money for living abroad will be able to take
advantage of studying abroad.
Experience of studying abroad can give global
insight for certain. However, due to the advance in technology and internet,
students can experience foreign cultures indirectly. These days, it is much
more convenient to learn foreign languages in one’s home country than before as
well. Therefore I suppose that studying abroad for some time might not be as
helpful for some students for the reasons mentioned in the above. |
