There is a growing number of people living
alone nowadays compared to the past. While some people focus on the negative
sides of this phenomenon, I think it is a positive development considering the
changes made in the society we live in.
Some people argue that living alone can
cause mental problems. If people live by their own, they
would easily be exposed to loneliness and depression due to lack of human
interaction. For example, if one returns from work or school and face the empty
house, it would be difficult for him or her to get emotional comfort or support
one can get from family member or flatmates. Therefore, people may experience
isolation which would result in negative effects on ones’ mental state.
However, I think the recent trend of living
alone in an appropriate way of adjusting one’s lifestyle to a fast changing
society. We now live in a network society where people repeat gathering and dispersal
for work or study or even relationships. In such way of life, everyone has
different life style and time patterns which would be hard to match with other
house members. Therefore, living alone allows each person to pursue their own
way and pace of living that suits one’s workstyle, while avoiding any possible trouble
which might be caused when individuals have to share a house. Furthermore, such
concerns regarding human isolation derive from a limited point of view which
did not consider these flexible networking aspects of living alone. By choosing
this form of living, people can manage their own time without being interrupted
by house members, therefore can enjoy their leisure time with greater freedom.
For instance, they can choose to participate in activities they are keen to and
meet new people in social media whenever they want.
In conclusion, I believe living alone is a
positive development which is a more suitable life style in current network
society. |
