People have different views about students’
course selection in university. While some argue that they should be restricted
to select the major which is related to technology for the future prosperity of
society, I personally believe that it would be more beneficial to learn what
they like for a variety of reasons.
On the one hand, there are a plenty of
advantages for students who major in technology related subjects these days.
First of all, with social atmosphere that the majority of companies are willing
to hire those who are specialized in the field of technology as the industries
connected with the field have been flourishing recently, they are likely to get
a job easier than those who graduated from art or history related college and
can be more competent workers in these day’s competitive job market eventually.
It can be beneficial both in personal and economic perspective. With regard to
social issues, high unemployment rate has been a significant problem for most
countries after global depression in1980s and introducing desirable major for
the future would be a reliable solution for this problem.
On the other hand, while there are
meaningful advantages I mentioned above, I strongly believe that disadvantages
outweigh them. The main reason is that no one can precisely anticipate the
field which are competitive and flourishing in the future. There is a risk of
miscalculation and the consequences will be disastrous. For instance, a lot of
students chose to study architectural engineering and construction as
governments made many projects for improving to improve infrastructure facilities all over
the country in 1990s in Korea. However, after the IMF crisis, all the projects
were stopped and more people than ever were discharged. After the decade,
medical professions are emerging as promising occupations in Korea, but there
are over supply of them recently. Furthermore, it is not a prospective business
anymore because of developments of an artificial intelligence system.

In conclusion, although there are benefits
of restricting subjects for students, I believe that the drawbacks far more
outweigh in the long term.
