While
many countries are strengthening history education these days, some people
think teaching practical skill that can help student get a job is more
important than anything and history is just one of the optional subjects.
However, I am against this view, I believe that teaching history is the most
essential and fundamental. It is supported by the importance of education of
history.
Firstly,
history education raises people who actively participated in a democratic
society. At this point, historical facts are the materials that offer diverse
sources for educating. Students can evaluate variety choices of the past and
can advocate or criticize them while studying history. Also, they can think how
to act if they were in the same situation. In other words, students can improve
their historical thinking skills and critical faculty. And these things make students
enhance their will of participation in social problems. Secondly,
teaching history can help students grow their identity. All people inherit
cultures and societies that were made by people in the past. For instance, a
person can establish his identity and can have self-esteem by learning history
of his own country. It is necessary for life that individuals and nationalities
understand the present based on the past and build up their national
identification. Moreover, in this process, students can gain lessons and
wisdom.
For
these reasons, I firmly believe that schools should spend more time teaching
history. It is undeniable that training the expertise for job opportunity is critical,
however, it is apparent that educating history is more imperative. |
