Nowadays, most people learn foreign languages and the number of bilingual and trilingual are increasing. Many parents teach their children a second language in their early age. Why are people so interest in and fascinated by studying languages other than their own mother tongue? Some people maintain that people learn a foreign language only for travel to or work in a foreign country. Of course, many people utilize their language skills when travel or work. Imagine that you cannot communicate with people in the area where you travel to or work. It will make a great inconvenience to both of you and the person whom you should communicate with. People learn foreign languages to reduce or eliminate such inconvenience. Therefore, the fact that people learn a foreign language in order to travel to or work in a foreign country can be true to some extent. Nevertheless, those cannot be the only reasons for learning a foreign language. The basic and primary reason of learning new languages would always be for communicating among people. We need such communication not only in travel or work but also in many other situations: when we study using materials published in different countries, meet foreign friends, or have cultural exchange in various circumstances, etc. Furthermore, if it is true that travelling or working is the only reason, people who do not have such opportunity would not need to learn other languages. However, this supposition is not persuasive because most people nowadays tend to learn foreign languages regardless of their interest or work field. In conclusion, travel to or work in a foreign country cannot be the only reason for learning a foreign language. Many people learn foreign languages for many different reasons based on the necessity of communication with people from all around the world in various situations. |
