Some people may argue that it is inevitable to impose admission fees for visitors for the maintenance and administration. However, i personally believe that drawbacks far more outweigh the benefits in the long term.
On the one hand, it is commonly believed that extra revenues earned by charging fees can be useful for maintenance and preservation of their heritages. A museum need huge operating costs for cleaning and maintenances. A lot of free museum have trouble with a lack of operational funds if they are not subsidized by governments. In this sense, the admission are likely to be a reliable solution for this problem. Secondly, it will be a great measure for visitors to be aware of the works' value and their duty to preserve cultural assets even though the fees are really small amount of money. Some experts insist they have seen a plenty of evidences the link between a small amount of entry fees and visitor's attitude toward the art works in the museum. It simultaneously awakens visitors to be inspired feeling of reponsibility for conservation of collection and heritage.
Despite of the advantages I mentioned above, the drawbacks far more outweigh in a long term. First of all, it makes works of art not fully accessible for public who are not affordable with entry fees. A country's cultural assets deserve to all of public and they should not belong to privilege few. Charging people for extremely high fees will widen the gap between social classes, even in a cultural area in a long term. Also, admissions could act as a discouragement for children to access works of art. It has been reported that children who live in cities with no museum fees are likely to possess highly estimated cultural competency compared than those who have to pay fees for the museum. This difference came from am accessibility of art works for public in their early lives. Under the circumstances of charging admissions, museums cannot be served as educational purposes.
In conclusion, although admission fees certainly have its advantages, I believe it is not beneficial for achieveing great equality of cultural opportunity for all of public in the long term.
