Your Answer ▼ Fast food chains are all over the world. Its convenience and tastes are the main reasons why many people are in favor of, no matter of the age. However, with its convenience has brought health problems. Obesity, heart disease, diabetes and such are increasing significantly, creating social problems for the government. Therefore, as a solution, the government is imposing a higher tax on the fast food. The question is, would it work?
In South Korea, the government imposed a higher tax on all cigarettes as an attempt to lower the number of people smoking. Many smokers complained about having to pay extra where they already paid too much. However, its policy achieved its purpose: decreased the number of smokers. When looking at the statistics, it may have achieved its goal, but most rights and freedoms have been neglected. Moreover, most of the people who smoke was to relieve their stress and the majority of them were not well economically established. So, it was the burden of the high price that made them not to buy the cigarettes and not the consideration of their health. Just like the Koreans, it will be the same to the people who enjoy fast food.
However, I am not saying that we shouldn't do anything because of the reasons above. I am recommending that rather than imposing a higher tax on the fast food which results in suppressing their freedom and desire, the government should create social programs to persuade people to a healthier life without making them overwhelming. In conclusion, people should not be forced at all to give up on something that they find it valuable, just because of the issues that are occurring along. Instead, they should be persuaded into making choices for themselves that leads to healthier lives. |
