Your Answer ▼ It is a common belief that college students do not have to take other nations' culture. However, I firmly believe that they should participate in any class related to the culture of a country because this helps students have a broaden sight along with globalization these days.
To begin with, learning other countries' culture can contribute to international cooperation. Students can learn how to prevent or settle dispute between different cultures. A recent study shows that knowledge of other cultures increases tolerance and contributes to world peace. This is because students already learned about foreign cultures so that they knew how to behave or talk with other friends from other countries. In addition to this, they were aware of resolving issues with foreigners smoothly.
On top of that, not only understanding other cultures, but students also are able to understand their own culture better. Taking a foreign culture class gives them the opportunity to think about their culture from a different point of view. From my experience, taking a Japanese history class really helped me a lot to understand Korean culture in a new way as well. Before, I only realized Japanes invaders were very cruel to Chosun Dynasty. However, after taking that class, I had newly realized that how Chosun Dynasty incompetent was at that time, even though Japanese absolutely did wrong.
To sum up, university students are necessary to take part in at least one class associated with foreign cultures in order to understand both other cultures and their own culture. This clearly allows them to better deal with current issues with other countries in a positive way. |
