Your Answer ▼People hold different views on the main purpose of university
education. Some groups say that students should be trained with certain curriculums
that benefit them when they get involved in workforce, while others claim that students
should be given just pure and plain knowledge. In this essay, I will explore
both opinions with my thoughts.
There is a clear reason why people arguing university education
system should be related to the jobs the students will have. This is because,
university is generally the last educational step students are in before
involved in workforce, which could be the most important time for them to be
prepared for the next steps, learning necessary skills and knowledge. By being
educated with useful knowledges for particular jobs, one would be able to
adjust to the field much quicker and comfortable than knowing nothing about the
job field. For example, as I have studied practical skills for cooking during my university
years, being a chef was not hard as I have prepared.
Nevertheless, others claim that university education should
contain not only the knowledge for the future employment but a whole knowledge of subjects. According
to them, when teaching is highly focused on the future jobs, students could
miss some valuable knowledge or skills. Having worked as a chef after only
practical focused studies in college, I had experienced the lack of knowledge
of nutrition balanced meals. This kind of unpractical paper study would also be
as important as practical skills and knowledge later time. Therefore, I agree
with this view, thinking being aware of a whole knowledge, even though it seems
to have no connections with future jobs, will be beneficial.
In conclusion, both opinions
have their own perspective with reasonable reasons. However, my opinion is that the main function
of university should be treating any subjects for its own sake. |
