Some people think museums should charge some money for admission while others think it is not necessary.
Discuss both views and give you opinion.
I believe in a hybrid form whereby both opinions are taken into account. This model not only works in theory, but also works in practice. My opinion is based on my previous experience, where I have seen numerous examples. Before I elaborate on such idea, I will go through the rationale of my argument.
First, both views have their merits and demerits. For example, by charging money for admissions, the museums can utilize this revenue, and reinvest in their facilities and services. This will bring more improvements in the quality of the museums than by only depending on taxes. However, admission charges can always hinder people from visiting. There can be different groups of people in this category. To some the admission charges, although not overwhelmingly, may burden them financially, while to others, make them just go to other attractions that are free. On the other hand, if museums do not charge any money, then the opposite effects may take place.
The solution to this conundrum can be achieved by combining both options. One way is to charge admission fees only to a certain groups of people who will not feel reluctant to visit a museum paying money. Children under a certain age and/or elderly people can be waived of admittance. Another way is to have some days of the week or some period during the day open to the public free of charge. By doing this, the museums overcome the aforementioned tradeoff issue. I have seen museums that operate under such admission policies with favorable results.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that by segmenting the visitors into different groups, and charging admission fees only to certain ones bearable of admissions, both museums and visitors can benefit rather than taking a one side position of either charging admissions or not.
