The two pie charts illustrate the
percentage of British students at this university who could speak other
languages except for English, in 2000 and 2010. The foreign language abilities
varied among no other language, French only, German only, Spanish only, another
language, and two other languages.
Most notably, Spanish was the most popular
language among students in the UK during the period. While the proportion of
Spanish-speaking students increased from 30 to 35 percent, the percentage of
students who could use French decreased from 15 to 10 percent. Meanwhile, the
percentage of German-speaking students remained stable at 10 percent.
It is interesting that the rate of
monolingual students fell by half, accounting for 10 percent in 2010. Moreover,
the percentage of students spoke another language and two other languages each
increased by five percent, representing 20 % and 15 % respectively.
Overall, it is clear that, between 2000 and
2010, the proportion of students who could speak foreign languages rose during
the period.
