It is true that all
of the universities and colleges provide essential functions to their
undergraduates. Some people argue that the primary purpose of the university
and college is to teach not only education but also fellowship. However, other
people claim that universities should concentrate on giving practical knowledge
to their students.
On the one hand, there are some people arguing that universities have an essential function about teaching socialisation. To be more precise, by conversing with different people from other countries and towns in university or college, students can learn their unique culture and the way of thinking. As a result, they can develop their interpersonal skills and also broaden their outlook. For example, Hyojin who is one of my best friends studying in New York said that, while studying in a university abroad, she had experienced lots of valuable things. Primarily, according to her, the most meaningful experience was to socialise with new friends from other countries and to learn their foreign customs and lifestyle. With this, she could notice how socialisation is essential in our society.
On the other hand,
other people claim that the most significant role of university or college is
to provide more practical knowledge and technics needed in the workforce.
Nowadays, many students choose a university and a major for their future
career. Thus, the importance of practical education in the university or
college is increasing dramatically. Moreover, by providing work experiences in
advances such as internship and work placement, students can better adapt to
their work field in the future. For instance, when I was a university student,
I took part in the internship programme which was provided by my college. With
this experience, I can have an opportunity to prove my capacity in the
workforce and also help me to find a more proper job when I graduated.
In conclusion, both
views have their strong points. However, it seems that the latter view is more
convincing: contribution to improving students capability and techniques before
getting work. |
