People have different opinions on whether or not extended family is important. Regarding this, some assert that extended family is still important in modern society. However, there is a more persuasive argument that extended family is not worth in contemporary society. Both views will be discussed below as well as my personal opinion regarding this issue. On the one hand, extended family is significant because the number of grandparents who raise their grandchildren has increased. With both parents working outside the home, a person for caring their children become necessary. Accordingly, grand parents usually take care of their grandchildren instead of their parents. For instance, according to a recent survey conducted on parents who working together, over 70 percent of the respondents stated that their parents usually raise their kids instead of them. As the example illustrates, extended family is important for childcare. Nevertheless, since people in modern society think education and their career is more important than family life, they think extended family is not significant. Accordingly, many people leave hometowns to seek education and career opportunities. For example, a recently released poll has shown that 60 percent of koreans desire to emigrate even though they cannot see and spend time with their families. This demonstrates that people these days no longer think that extended family is important. To sum up, while it is apparent that extended family is significant for childcare, it is undeniable that people in contemporary society think their own life is more important than their family. |
