Some
people think that international sports events that are known as the field of
fair competition contribute to world peace. I have no hesitation in opposing
that view. I think advocating World peace in the situation that continues to
fight and compete is a contradiction. Unless all people’s ideas are the same,
there is no peace.
There
are two reasons to support my opinion. First, the international matches have
structural problems that cannot actualize the peace of the world. Competition
among nations makes people build their competitive spirits, and those feeling
can lead to a conflict. For instance, in a soccer game between Honduras and El
Salvador, the confrontation caused by both countries’ citizens has ever led to a
real war in 1970. It is ridiculous that sports extravaganza that emphasizes the
importance of the player’s ranking from beginning to end makes for the peace
maintenance. Secondly, there is no shortage of examples that are used as
political purposes. Let’s take an example of the Olympic Games. The Olympics
should not be about politics. However, when the first Olympics was held in Athene,
Greece, it was meant to prevent the war with Turkey. Also, in 1936, the Berlin
Olympics is used as Hitler’s political tool. The events that are used
politically cannot be neutral.
For
these reasons, I think international sports events don’t help in world peace. Foundational
structure seems even far away from keeping the peace. It is necessary to
consider what the ultimate purpose of the global sports events is. |
