Certainly, leadership plays a crucial role in
people’s daily lives in many of the places where they work or play. Some people
think that leaders who have great leadership spend more time listening rather
than speaking, while others do not agree on this idea. Both sides may have
their own reasons to support their views. If I had to choose one, I would say
that listening is more important than talking in leadership. There are several
reasons as follows.
If a leader are more likey to listen their
team’s idea than talking just own idea, it improves their teamwork. When a
leader had good listening, the leader can understand team’s diversity and compromise
other people’s idea. As a result, it would prevent the break of team. When this
personal traits are developed, it is likely to bring a better result in team’s
condition. For example, when I was in university, I prepared the presentation
contest with my friends and I was a leader of the team. In those days, I had little
experience a leader before. So, I just expressed my own thinking to my friends
without considering my team’s idea. Then, my team’s circumstance was not good and
it makes almost a break of my team. This makes my leadership change and I
started to listen my team’s idea actively. This resulted in becoming better in
my team’s condition. Therefore, we could get a prize in that contest. Without
good listening, there is no team.
In addition, when a leader spend more time
listing to other people, it enhances a team’s performance. Good listener can
understand team’s various idea and also develop the team’s idea more
efficiently. This makes team’s performance great. For instance, according to a
study in stanford university, there was a huge difference between two groups of
young leaders. One group consisted of those who were good listener, and the
other group was made up of those who had a lack of listening and liked to just talking
their own thinking. The researchers found that the former was more likely to
have a higher performance in their team project.
This implies
that spending more time in listening is the key to success.
All
things considered, I strongly believes that the advantages of listening far
outweigh those of talking for the reasons I have mentioned above.
