Railroads are, without a doubt, one of the greatest
breakthrough of modern transportation system that allowed the industrialization
bloomed. However, as cars had become one of the most common transportation
method for majority of households in the United States, the shift of development
and investment of roads occurred rather than railroads. Nonetheless, the
investment and development of railroads are more important now than ever, in my
opinion.
First of all, railroads can reduce traffic. Traffic can be such
a troublesome in a modern society especially during the rush hour. In an
attempt to relieve the traffic, Charlotte, one of the biggest cities in North
Carolina, has recently finished building a new railroad that connects the major
destinations of the city such as downtown Charlotte and University of North
Carolina Charlotte. They also built convenient parking decks where people can
park their cars and commute to downtown using the train.
Secondly, railroads can alleviate pollution. It is well known
fact that smokes from cars are one of the leading cause of air pollution. In
South Korea, to reduce the number of cars driven on a single given day, started
a campaign that inhibits from driving a car with certain license plate number
on a specific day. For example, one may not drive a car with a licence plate that starts with number one on the first day of the month. Along with the
same concept of reducing the number of cars on the road to alleviate air
pollution, the government may promote riding trains to commute or travel over
driving cars.
In
conclusion, the benefits of railroads can be greatly valued in modern societies
where many people suffer from traffic and air pollution on a daily basis.
Therefore, governments should invest more money in developing railroads so that
they can be more widely spread throughout the country thus more convenient for people to use. |
