It is true that
nowadays a host of countries have been implementing mandatory second language
classes - especially English. Some people think that it is good for children in
many ways. However, other people believe that protecting local language is much
more important than acquiring the second language. In the course of this essay,
I will propose my opinion about whether learning English is essential for
children or not and also if we have to preserve minority local language, how we
can protect them.
First of all, on the
one hand, I strongly believe that acquiring a new language, especially English,
is critical in the global society. As we know, since English is a native
language in some major developed countries such as the United States and the
UK, the acquisition of English has become essential to many nations - mainly
developed countries. This is because those who live in developing countries
have been struggling to find their opportunities to study or work, but by
mastering English, they can get a chance to build their career in developed
states and eventually get a much better life than before.
However, even if
learning English is important in the international society, I also think that
preservation of the native language is more critical than acquiring the second
language. Furthermore, without the prerequisite learning mother tongue,
mastering another country's language is pointless. Hence, in order to protect a
lot of minority language, more feasible and practical measures are implemented
by the government and all schools. Firstly, the government should regulate
schools not to teach second languages until their children fully understand and
acquire their native language. Moreover, all schools have to propagate the
right way of thinking concerning mother tongue so that schoolchildren have the
proper awareness of native language and regard their local language as much
valuable than the second language.
In conclusion, it is
evident that the importance of learning English has been increasing
significantly nowadays. It is also critical to preserve mother tongues in
minority societies and in order to ensure the survival of native languages, the
government and all schools should band together.
