▶ Your Answer :
Convenience. To achieve this single word, hundreds and thousands of scientists have sacrificed their lives. Consequently, today in this 21st century, we live in a world where most of the daily tasks can be handled in a split second: a button, or a click is often all that is needed. We live in a much easier world without a doubt, but whether we are happier or not is a different question to answer.
People believe convenience to be an important value, because it saves time and energy for them to do required tasks. This means that one can make a lot more choices on how to spend the superfluous resources that is left after the necessary fulfillments. As a result, more can be spent on pursuing one’s happiness. Therefore, people believe that with convenience, one can be a lot more happy. However, this statement lacks one important fact; some activities hold special meanings and emotions soley because of the inconveniences they take in their process. By living an easier life, we loose the special moments that we could have had, pushing ourselves farther away from the “better life.”
We can easily find such examples in English Literature. In , for example, Julie (the main character of the novel), sends a letter to her benefactor. Because she is an orphan, she feels this action to be very special. To her, it is an act of giving love to the only person on Earth who cares for her. She thinks about what to write every day, and thinks over again and again to tell her story. Writing the long letter, she feels affection toward the “Daddy Long Legs(the nickname of the benefactor that Julie herself made),” and enjoys the happiness of hoping and waiting for a reply. If she could send text-messages that can be sent in a short time and less energy, she would not have felt such deep affection toward her benefactor or feel happy waiting for a reply. Writing a letter was a special moment to her, and simply typing it into a cell phone would have deprived her of the warm feeling she got writing the letter by her own hands and posting it.
Convenience is certainly a good thing – nobody denies that. However, one must never forget the fact that sometimes we loose important parts of our lives because of it. Making life easier does not mean that our life is better – the really important things exist because of the time and energy we spend in them. We must never forget to live “better.” |
