I oppose having a new high school built in my neighborhood. Although I know the need for new school facilities, I don’t want the school to be built near my neighborhood. I think it would cause a lot of problems.
First of all, there are not many teenagers in my neighborhood or in my suburban subdivision. Most of the residents here are either retired or consist of families with very young children. A local high school would mean more buses and more teenagers driving to school. Either way, this would cause heavy traffic in this neighborhood.
In addition to the traffic on school days, there would be heavier traffic whenever there is a sporting event, such as a basketball or football game, or major school activities. Will there be enough parking spaces in order to take care of many people who would attend those events? The answer is no. Consequently, those extra cars would end up parking in my neighborhood.
My neighbors and I would also be upset about the loss of the park, which is the site where the high school would be built. Mothers with young children get together every morning to play together and people my age like to walk there in the evening. On weekends, that park is a place for picnics and recreation. We’d be sad to lose our neighborhood park.
I also have some concerns about all those students being in our neighborhood. Would there be problems with drugs or fighting? Could the school guarantee us that it will be safe? These are concerns that I don't think can be addressed sufficiently for me to support a new high school in our neighborhood. |
