I think the media pays too much attention to the private lives of celebrities. Television, newspaper magazines, and the Internet dig up all kinds of stories about celebrities’ pasts. They say that these are true reflections of these people's characters. This might be somewhat true if the events occurred only a few years earlier, but some of these events were things that people did when they were teenagers. The media expects people in their 40s to explain things they did when they were 15. If they killed someone, obviously that's more than a youthful mistake; usually, though, these incidents involve experiments with drugs or driving recklessly. They're not things that the public needs to know. The media loves to say that the public has right to know. That's not necessarily true. We don't need to know if a movie star or politician has had an extramarital affair. That is a concern only to the people who are involved. We do need to know if someone we're electing for public office has been involved in shady business deals, but we don't need to know if he or she defaulted on a loan 20 years ago. It seems the media digs up too many facts without giving them thoughtful consideration. This can have an effect on the celebrities' families, especially their children. A celebrity's a good name and credibility can be ruined before he or she can prove that the rumors are false. When are we, the public, going to make it clear to the media that we're tired of having to watch this kind of thing on the news? Wouldn't it be better if they would concentrate on more important issues? |
