▶ Your Answer : The question “Does the present system of education
encourages us to admit our lack of knowledge, or is there too much pressure to
demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge?” suggests that the current education
system is trying to shove too much knowledge into student’s head. In other
words, the systems focus more on the scores and not letting them to know and
admit their lack of knowledge. In my opinion, the education should start change
its system so the students do not have to fear about their scores and proving
what they know of. Throughout society and in life, the evidence to support
my viewpoint is pervasive.
Let’s
look at the most famous, the most used system, standardized testing. It has
been used for the long time in various locations, and its value has been proved,
too. It made everything easier for the educators to measure student’s knowledge
based on its score. However, there were factors that educators were
pretermitting; such as creativity, honesty, things that cannot be measured by
the tests. Educators categorized each student by their knowledge demonstration
only on tests. It made students to focus only on getting questions right. It
was not intentional; educators didn’t think that the tests will bring this result,
but it is their fault not fixing it right. The whole concept of standardized
testing gave students too much pressure on proving their knowledge.
Since
when questioning to teacher was a shameful thing to do as a learning student?
Students are there to learn, and we should not expect them to know the every
subject matter. The environment of classroom should also be changed. Nowadays,
students tend to stay quiet other than asking what they don’t know. They are
too afraid to speak out their unsure answers. The classroom atmosphere is now
awkward, silent, and uncomfortable to students. First, we need to make it more
comfortable so that they can easily ask someone who can help them with; like
pairing with the one who can help. Then they won’t have to fear and just share
their opinion with each other. Rightness, the accuracy became important since
the students are judged by it; it must be changed.
Most
of the standardized test penalizes student if the answer is wrong. If the test
penalize student for their lack of knowledge and discourages them, why would
they want to admit it? It will give the students false impressions; such as the
score is more important than an actual knowledge they have or justifying that better
score means that their knowledge is better than other student with low score.
Other than penalizing students for their lack of knowledge, they should
consider a different way of scoring.
Clearly, the examples above show that the education system needs to
change due to its false way of pressuring students for their manifestation.
Standardized test discourage student by penalizing them for their lack of
knowledge, and it isn’t the best way to express their knowledge. The classroom environment
should be more comfortable, accessible for students to gain their knowledge,
not to prove it. Only if we changed the way of categorizing students, we would
have given them more chance to happily learn. |
