문학가 들이나 비평가들이 사용하는 문학 용어들을 정리한 내용입니다. 많은 단어들이 실제 SAT 시험이나 AP English Literature 시험과 직접 관련이 있으니 참고하시기 바랍니다.
Denotation : The dictionary definition of a word. (단어라는 의미, connotation과 구분)
Denouement : The resolution that occurs at the end of a play or work of fiction (연극이나 소설의 후반부 결론)
Deus ex machina : The use of an artificial device or gimmick to solve a problem (문제 해결을 위한 수단이나 방책을 의미하는 문학용어)
Dionysian : The word refers to sensual, pleasure-seeking impulses (쾌락주의적 충동)
Dramatic irony : A circumstance in which the audience or reader knows more about a situation than a character (등장인물 보다 독자가 작품속에 나오는 상황을 더 잘 판단하는 경우)
Ellipse : Three periods(…) indicating the omission of words in a thought or quotation (생략을 나타내는 말 줄임표)
Elliptical construction : A sentence containing a deliberate omission of words (의도적으로 단어를 생략한 문장구조)
Empathy : A feeling of association or identification with an object or person (사물이나 타인에 대한 감정이입)
Epic : A narrative poem that tells of the adventures and exploits of a hero (영웅들의 모험담을 묘사한 시)
Epigram : A concise but ingenious witty, and thoughtful statement (간략하나 기지가 넘치는 표현묘사)
Epithet : An adjective or phrase that expresses a striking quality of a person or thing : sun-bright lake is an example (사물을 묘사하는 형용사따위; 예를 들면, 햇살 가득한 호수)
Euphemism : A mild or less negative usage for a harsh or blunt term (완곡어법)
Explication : The interpretation or analysis of a text (해설, 분석)
Falling action : The action in a play or story that occurs after the climax and that leads to the conclusion and often to the resolution of the conflict (작품에서 절정을 지난후 발생하는 사건으로 보통 결말로 이어짐)
Farce : A comedy that contains an extravagant and nonsensical disregard of seriousness, although it may have a serious, scornful purpose (심각한 목적을 위한 희극으로 흔히 풍자따위를 나타냄)
First-person narrative : A narrative told by a character involved in the story, using first-person pronouns such as I and we. (1인칭 소설)
Flashback : A return to an earlier time in a story or play in order to clarify present actions or circumstances (과거 장면으로 순간적 회귀)
Foreshadowing : Providing hints of things to come in a story or play (장래에 일어날일에 대한 징조)
Harangue : A forceful sermon, lecture, or tirade (격렬한 발언, 비난)
Hubris : The excessive pride that often leads tragic heroes to their death (목숨을 바칠만큼의 자부심)
Hyperbole : Overstatement ; gross exaggeration for rhetorical effect (과장된 표현)
