According to the reading passage, there are three reasons why the ecosystem of the Everglades is being destroyed. However, the listening passage contradicts this claim by affirming that the ecosystem of the area enter upon a new phase.
First of all, the lecturer points out that the rate of water pollution is now declining in the region. He mentions that the government recently began to regulate the use of fertilizers. To be specific, it has became impossible to use fertilizers which have significant level of harmful chemicals, because they are switched to those which have lower d chemicals. This refutes the author's assertion that water pollution is getting worse because of the chemicals of fertilizers.
Second, according to the professor, there is a good news about the solution of erosion. local officers and residents, who live in southern Florida, began a soil restoration project. Even though the project might need a large amount of time, it is likely that the soil will be eventually restored to original contition. This casts doubt on the text's idea that losing soil in the Everglades causes irreparable problem.
Third, the listening passage mentions that it is less likely for wildlife in the Everglades to be extinct. This is because the Government recently bought seven hundred of properties in order to convert it to habitat of wildlife. Thus, wildlife in this area would have more chance of survival rather than dissappear in the future. This challenges the writer's claim that human development in the Everglades is threatening wildlife, making a number of species disappear.
