Some people think that individuals’ freedom should not be violated by others. However, in my opinion, it is permissible to infringe upon personal right and liberties in certain circumstances such as when someone has a job that could affect the safety of others and when acts of terror are being kept from happening. To begin with, safety is a very important issue when it is especially related to someone’s life. In our society, there are many jobs that can affect others’ safety. So, people in those jobs should take infringement on personal freedom when they conduct their duties. For example, the positions such as policemen, firemen, and school bus drivers are closely associated with other people’s safety. If they are under the influence of drugs and alcohol, the public’s lives will be seriously threatened. Thus, it is allowable to violate their right and liberties and conduct random drug tests. This is vital to ensure that these people do not make others in grave danger in any case. On top of that, personal freedom can be violated when the occurrence of attacks by terrorists is expected. Since the threat of terrorism has been significantly increased these days, various actions must be taken to avoid the potential attacks and these actions may infringe upon individuals’ freedom. For instance, in order to detect dangerous materials and bombs, airports need to conduct security checks on people and their luggage. Although this action is a coercive measure and intrudes on their personal space, it is necessary to protect the public from potential threats by terrorists. To sum up, some people have jobs that could put people in danger and protecting the public from the terrorists’ attacks is very crucial. In this regard, I firmly hold that it is acceptable to infringe on people’s liberties in certain situations. |
